T he Chinese have a saying – that is to remember where your roots and heritage lie. Saab draws from that teaching by paying homage to their iconic 900 turbo.

You have to travel back in time to Frankfurt almost 30 years ago to witness Saab reveal their very first turbocharged model, the Saab 99 hatchback. The engineers at Saab developed the turbo for series-production cars, and made it more reliable and efficient. That model changed the automotive landscape and set a trend other carmakers were to follow. Perhaps the people at Saab decided it was time to revisit the past, and draw inspiration from there. Three decades on, Saab unveils the Turbo X with obvious pride. Fitted with a new high-performance engine, the Turbo X nonetheless tries to recreate the mystique and class of their flagship turbo model. It is a car that was conceptualised based on their historical automotive breakthrough, but bears all the hallmarks of a future classic.
